2008-08-07 · The Islander is a cradle to grave biography of the Nobel Prize winning Icelandic author, Halldor Laxness. There is a wealth of detail about Laxness's remarkable life, although the writing itself is clumsy, possibly due to translation issues-- however, the translation was done by Philip Roughton who did a brilliant job on Iceland's Bell, so the problem is most likely with Halldor Gudmundsson's original text. Laxness is almost an exception in that he was the only person (to my knowledge) to carry that particular family name, and Halldór is a common name so it's very easy to refer to him as Laxness (although "Kiljan" is just as popular). When he was alive Icelanders wouldn't just call him "Laxness" when addressing him though.
